The election is finally over, and based on those early polls, it comes as no surprise Barack Obama will be our next President. A historic election for many reasons, but probably the most significant is the United States will have for the first time ever a black President. Personally, I am glad the campaigning is over because I am SICK AND TIRED of all those political ads. Televisions, radios, yard signs, and all those phone calls have been driving me crazy. It got so bad at my house, I stopped answering the phone when the caller ID registered a number I did not recognize. That’s pretty bad when a person must hide in their own house. The one thing I will not miss is talking about the election with my students. Like so many things about education, one of the great joys about teaching is talking to YOU (my students) about the subject at hand.
As we continue to talk about President Obama, he faces many challenges in his next job. He will be President of a nation greatly divided along party lines; many Republicans are not enthused about the future of our country. Obama must win over their trust and respect. The economy continues to be a serious problem in the US and world. He made campaign promises about energy solutions and our dependence on foreign oil. For his proposed health care plan, I’ve been assured I may keep my current health care but the cost will be lowered by as much as $2,500 a year. You can be sure the country is going to scrutinize him very closely. Yes, he too will be judged by the very people who elected him. Let us not forget the world stage, as foreign governments and its citizens will be evaluating him. You can see the pressures Obama faces, but these are the very challenges every newly elected President must face. Sometime in late April, we will evaluate Obama’s first 100 days in office and decide for ourselves his job performance. But for right now, post a comment on what you believe will be Obama’s biggest challenge in the first 100 days, and WHY?

well first of I definetly agree with you about the fact of all the ads about the election and most of all I hate are those phone calls! they drove our family nuts! I think he will have three problems in the first 100 days, someone trying to murder him, the economy, and being nervous. first there have been threats to kill obama so that make him a little nervous. The economy because the economy is doing really bad right now and I think he have troubles with it. Then being nervous because all first presidents are nervous until they start to get used to it.
First off, I agree with you Mr. Merecereau, abut being glad the election is over. We all are!!!
I believe one of President Obama's challenges are, like Matthew said, putting up with people that hate him so much they would try to assasinate him. Even though I disslike our new presidint I would never want to kill him, and I don't know why any one would want to kill some one just because they don't like! It is so horrible!
Another big challenge for Obama would be to try to fix a very weak Economy. It will be extremly tough, but I hope and pray that Obama can ocomplish it.
P.S. I agree with you Matthew.
I belive Obama's greatest challenge will be the economy. Many people don't have jobs because the buisnesses are down sizing and many people are in great dept. He has a big job right now to fix our economy.
I also think it will be hard to send back all the troops in our military. They are out fighting for others freedom and are costing us alot of money.
And thirdly I think he will have difficulty saying he is highering taxes for people who make more money than the average joe. That will cause more people to not like him as our president. I beleive that Obama should keep the taxes the same and the people who don't have jobs should get off the couch and work.
And that is another thing we should be getting our gas from our country. Therefore we will have more jobs and even CHEAPER gas!!! That will help our economy, maybe lower our taxes, and help our country.
I could not agree with you more Mr.Mercereau, I'm glad the election is over too. It was driving people crazy to see who would be the next president.I think one of the problems he will face is the economy. It is extremely bad right now.Like Jacob and Matthew said it will be tough to fix the economy.Secondly he promised a lot of people a lot of different things. And if he doesn't keep those promises people will not like it.And thirdly, about the war . He wants to bring the troops back over yo the US. That might not be such a bad idea. But,it will be really hard to do that. Some people won't agre with him at all.
Being a president is a really hard job to manage. Our job as christians is to support our president, elect, and to pray for him to guide our country even if we don't agree with his platform.
inI personally think Obama's biggest challenge in the first 100 days is going to be nerves. Like Matthew said, all presidents are nervous until they get used to it. If I was Obama, I woul would really nervous because I would be afarid I would do something wrong on the first day. I also think Obama would be nervous and scared because there are some people who want to muder him. I think knowing that I could be killed maybe even kidnapped any second of the day would be a little nerve racking.
I agree with Mr. Merecereau I am so glad the election is over! I was getting so tired of the commercials and the phone calls. Some of Obamas challenges will be like Malia said the economy, also making gas cheaper, and making more jobs.
Another great challenge is whether to worry more about the Republicans or Democrats. Like Matthew and Jacob said some people want to hurt him. Even if he is not my favorite President I would not want anyone to hurt him. He should be nervous about running our country and making our County run smoothly like every president before him.
I think the biggest challenge is that Obama has to create new jobs for people who have lost or are losing theirs. I am hearing of more company's that are laying off people because they do not have enough work for them to do. I think this is the biggest challenge because all family's need jobs to provide for their family's. Without jobs our country is just going to get worse.
To begin this blog I want to agree with Mr. Mercereau about the election being over. Obama's biggest problem is how he promised he was going to make taxes and everything different, but is he going to keep that promise. And as Matthew said he's worrying about being murdered, but I would never think abou doing something like that. But pretty sure he's nervous about the economy problems were having. But I also think he will keep his promise about making gas cheaper and haveing more jobs. And I'm also worrying about what he's going to do with our troops,he says he's going to bring them back to the U.S.A, whats up with that.OK sorry, but who's going to protect the U.S.A from terrorists and bad people like that. Idon't think that people need to be so hard on him,I mean he's not even in office yet and we're already criticising him. But we need to give him a chance becuase he might do something good for us.we need to trust in GOD'S plan and our new president. We need to pray that Obama will be a good president.
It seems Matthew, Jacob, Malia, Claire, Dylan, Amber and Zac all agree this campaign took its toll on our patience-we’re tired of it, and glad it’s over.
Economy and Obama’s personal safety seem to be the consensus so far. I can’t disagree with any of those thoughts.
Malia, good job on commenting about the war on terrorism.
Claire, and Mallory I especially liked your thoughts about how difficult it is to be President.
Zac, well stated comments and you articulated you thoughts very well.
To all students that have posted thus far, GOOD JOB on commenting about previous posts. You are encouraged to post follow-up comments.
I agree with Mathew about the economy thing. I think it will definitely be one of the hardest things for him to handle. Health care is another thing I think he will have trouble with. He will probably have a hard time convincing people to trust him.
I believe that Obama's first 100 days challenge will be all the pressure and fame. It would be hard for someone to transition from a normal life to being President. He probably has a lot of people expecting a lot of good things out of him even though they might not get them. I will be hard for him to handle the fame and all the attention of the world. There is a lot of tension about the economy. People are losing their jobs because of how bad the economy is. That is pretty bad and I bet he couldn't fix it with the "spread the wealth." What happens to any wealth if there aren't enough jobs? What is there to spread? Besides, we can't depend on rich people to give us money; we have to work to earn our living.
I think Obama's biggest challenge will be to shape up our economy. So many people are without jobs and many other people don't have the money they need to support their family. Many people will depend on him to do something about the ridiculous price of everything right now. (Thank goodness gas is cheap. 1.95!!!)
We need to pray for him to make the right choices and help our economy.
I'm really glad the election is finally over I was so tried of all the ads on TV. I think Obama greatest challanges are that he has to be worried that someone will try to assasinate him, since people have already made threats and have been arrested for this. Also, all the campaign promises he made about the economy. The economy is only getting worse and it is going to take a long time to fix the problems and people want things fixed quickly and they might think he isn't living up to the promises he made. He is going to have a hard time bringing the troops all home beacuse if we leave Iraq at one time there will probably be more problems over there .
Yes, I'm sure everyone is glad that the election is over. As almost everyone has pointed out, most likely his number one priority will be the economy. President Bush left our ecomomy in a horrible state. Obama will have a hard time getting that in good shape.
Another problem ill be the war. People have various opinions about what he should do.
As I looked at some of the comments, I relized the president is like an Egyptian pharoah. If some thing bad happens, the president gets most (if not all) the blame.
I agree with you one hundred percent Mr. Mercereau about the ads that was the worst time ever. And I agree with Matthew those telephone calls were pointless! My mom was so happy when this was over. I think he’ll have three challenges, one: terrorist killing people in Iraq, Two: the economy because Bush threw it out-of-whack, and lastly: being nervous. All of these have one reason : he’s inexperienced.
This has been a intresting election. This IS the first time in american history, that a black person got elected.
Anyway, I think his challenge will be gaining people's trust. He might of won the election, but that doesn't mean everybody trusts him. ( Well mostly repulicans) So in this 100 days challenge, he has to earn people's trust, I agree with Dylan, Matthew, and Jacob. There ARE some people in America that wants to kill him, but if he does then Joe Biden will become president. No offense but I think he's kind of loony.
i think obamas biggest challenge will be with having to deal with all the things he said he would do when he was still running for pres. like auto industry bail out and housing problems there are lots of people in so much debt that they can not pay there bills. those are some of the problems i think he will face and i dont think it would have changed if mccain would have become pres. because he would still have to face the same things such as housing problems and auto industry bail out but the thing that would have changed their decisions that would make a big difference.
I think what will be the hardest thing for the first 100 days will being nervus and being killed nervus because it is the first time being presedent for the first time being killed because a lot of people dont like him very much
I think President/elect Obama's toughest challenge will be proving he's a true born American citizen. The reason is because he has people saying he is born some where else. You can read about it here
i think that Obamas biggest problem will be, well, America. Getting her into shape will be a huge problem. He will have to shape up the economy, choose the right taxes, and not to mention the war, health, education, immigration, environment, and the relationship with other countries.
My whole family hated all of phone calls at night; and the mudslinging got me frustrated and mad.
But about Obama, I believe that one of the hardest things might be the war because war can be tricky and unruley. An other one could be keeping all his promises he's made about the country.
I agree, those cammercials were annoying. I couldn't watch T.V. for five minutes without seeing one of those commercials. I think that in obamas first 100 days his biggest challenge will be the economy, because it's very weak right now and he has sayed that he would do alot of things to help it.
I am definitly siding with Mr.Mercerau about being glad the election is over and all the the campaigning ads are over. I think the hardest challenges for obama will be the economy, trying to get that back up and running. Second I think it will be hard to keep all the promises he made about if he was president. Most candidates promise things but they never happen . I think the third problem will be the war that has been going on for 4 years.
Dear Mr. Mercereau,
I'm so sorry this is late! With the Disney trip popped on me I had no time to do it. I was going to do it last Wendesday but, I had no time between packing and trying to show my dad how I wanted my mythology cards printed. So please except my work late even if is a late grade.
Obama will face very many problems but one is the economy. Many of our wealthy americans depend on the U.S. economy. All the promises Obama has made have been to good to be true. He really needs to think through his plan befor he makes any more promises! A lot of our fellow Americans are depending on him to maket the economy better. If he doesn't prove himself and keep his promises it will be a major down fall on his and our parts.
Another thing he already had to do is make the decision on closing the prison in Iraq that hold terrorists. I'm not sure if he sighned to close it, but while I was watching the news it looked like the prisoners may be set free.
I think one issue is his stress level and gaining our trust.
