As of this posting, the presidential election is only 27 days away. We are in the home stretch, and both candidates are fired up and going at each other with full force. All those commercials attacking each other can be very powerful, especially to an undecided voter. Also, those commercials cost the candidates a fair bit of money. As your parents drive you around town you may have spotted the candidate’s signs. Have you thought about where the money is coming from for those very expensive commercials and yard signs? Click the above link and read the article to familiarize yourself with some basics about this campaign's finance.
I think you will agree this campaign has some “big bucks” involved. It has been argued candidates can buy elections with enough advertising. Think about songs you have heard on the radio that you did not particularly like at first, but after hearing it enough times you start to like it. The same has been said of campaign commercials-you start believing what the candidates tell you.
Here is your assignment in two parts; be sure to post your responses: 1) Do you think campaign television commercials are important in this election and why? 2) Which candidate’s commercial do you think is the most effective and why? For part two you will need to watch some television (you don’t get that very often as a homework assignment!). Remember you need not agree with the candidate, but view the commercial objectively and determine if it was persuasive.

I think that TV commercials/advertisements are extremely important in the campaign right now because it's the best way to attract people's attention. Most pople spend most/A LOT of their time in front of the TV. From what I have seen on TV it seem's as if Obama has had way more TV commercials than McCain has.
p.s. Sorry Mr. Mercereau, I can't fully answer part two of the question because I havn't whatched enough TV to answer but I will later .
Yes, I think tv commercials are important because many people watch tv and it helps them be persuaded to vote for that canadiate. For example, some commercials are saying that the canidate raises taxes and keeps the money for themselves. And and another reason is it reminds people to vote for that canidate.
I think the most effective commercial is McCain's commercial because he has good ideas about what he will do when he is president. Unlike Obama's commercials because he is not as expericenced in being a leader. His priority is for abortion and the break down of marriage between a man and a woman.
That is why a fair voter should not vote for Obama.
I do believe that campaines are very important in this election becauseit helps the candidate(s) get more votes. I believe Obama's commercials are more effective than McCain's because Obama abvertises more commercials than McCain does.
I think that TV commercials are very important in this election because like Hannah said, it is the best way to attract alot of people's attention. Almost every person in the U.S.A watches TV.
So far, Obama's commercials I think have been more affective then McCain's. I think this because Obama has had alot more commercials then McCain has had. Obama's commercials have also been more persuasive then McCain's.
Yes, I think tv commercials are important in this election because a lot of people watch tv. And when they watch tv they know what the presidents want to do in office. So the people will knnow who they will want to vote for.
I would have to say Obama's commercials because it appears to me that Obama has more commercials on TV than McClain. I am constantly hearing Obama on the TV as I pass by the room where my parents are watching TV and I hear Obama. As I listen to his voice I feel that he has a geninue tone to what he is saying.
Yes I believe so because most Americans watch TV, so yeah either candidate can get more voters that way. I believe that both are equally matched McCain and Obama both have positives and negatives for example McCain, to some people makes too many attacks on Obama, and to others he may not.
P.S I found a clip on Google where McCain said “my fellow prisoners.” Huh now? Oh yeah I agree with you Jacob.
I think T.V.commercials are very inportant right now because they will get more points that way. I think the most effective commercials are mcCain he talks about ehat he will be when he is a presedent
p.s. i agree with you malia
I think that these kinds of advertisements are extremely important for both candidates. The T.V. commercials are probably the most effective because so many people watch so much television. Obama does seem to have more commercials than McCain does Hannah. I don't watch much TV but I think that the many Obama commercials are more effective than McCain. He tells the people what they want to hear. I'm personally a McCain fan.
I think TV commercials and advertisment well help them get more voters. I agree with Malia, Obama is not really a expericenced leader. Anyways lots of people watch TV so they will probably see the commercials. Also I agree with Hannah there are a lot of obama commercials. Even though I'm a McCain fan, I have to say, Obama's commercials are more persausive.
1)Yes,I think the T.V commercails or advertisements are extremely important because it's a way to get people to vote for either canidate. I also think this is important because people now days are watching a lot of T.V so they should be able to vote for either canidate by just watching most of the presidentail debates.2)Personally I think that John has had the best debate, becuase Obama says he's going to lower taxes, but in another debate he said he was going to keep them same, I hope that nobody votes for Obama becuase he has lied in about 3 different debates. And I don't see why they won't to vote for him becuase he can't give a speech without looking at a teleprompter. Who would won't a President that would have to look at a telepromter to just give a speech that he was supposed to be ready for. I personally think the effective debate is John's becuase he has really good ideals to do when he is president. For which Obama believes in abortion an d the seperation of men and women.Who would won't to vote foe a man like that. And as Malia said, that's why the fair voter should not vote for Obama.
GO JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!
Yes, it is very important in this election for t.v commercials because alot of people are still trying to decide but they still cant pick.I don't think that they should say bad things about each other though like in some commercials, I like it more when they say good things about themselves not bad about the other canidate. Right now I think Obama is doing the best in getting people through commercials. He has had so many more than John McCain has. Like mallory said his are also more persuasive than mcCains. Obama is definetly getting the commercial votes.
I am half and half on the T.V commercial subject. My mother works at social services of Ierdell county. She has had a ton of people register to vote wile they were getting food stamps/financial assentience. Some of the people can't aford to watch too much telivision. And most of the people registering to vote are registering as democrat and they won't change their ways no matter what they see on T.V. But over all, I think T.V. is a great way to advertise a campaighn.
I persanally don't care for Obama but his adds are pretty good, but so are some of John McCains. I think most people like Obama's adds because he is offering a lower tax cut than McCain.
Question, Have you ever noticed driving down one street you will see a lot of the same sighns?
I'm really glad that "Joe" did what he did by speaking against Obama. Obama is being horrible by mocking and insulting him.
Hannah, great comment about the importance of TV ads. And good job on following up with a comment about “Joe the Plumber.” I greatly admire students who stick with an assignment and follow through with it to the end.
Malia, your comment about negativity is what many have shared about Obama’s commercials. But is this a bad thing? See my final comments below and consider posting a follow up comment.
Jacob, great job on mentioning the quantity of Obama’s commercials-all that TV time cost a lot of money. That was one of the points I wanted your class to take from this blog; that, plus the difference in money raised by each candidate.
Mallory, you also very astutely point out the large number of commercials being put forth by one candidate. Good job!
Claire, excellent point about Obama’s “genuine tone.” Obama’s tone has convinced many voters of his sincerity in his ability to make our country a better one.
Scott, great comments but I’m not sure what political ad you feel is the most effective.
Alexis, great job on posting your thoughts and commenting on your classmate’s posts. However, watch your spelling and grammar.
MacKenzie, great comments and very insightful. We agree about the importance of television commercials and potential impact.
Sarah, great job and you are in agreement with many when you declare that Obama’s commercials are more effective.
Yea Zac! Excellent post and thank you very much for writing so much. Great Job! I appreciate your comments about the debates. I’m proud of you for watching them.
Matthew, great post and I totally agree about the need to see more positive ads. Wouldn’t it be great to see more ads about what the candidates will do, instead of attack ads criticizing each other?
Abby, excellent post and outstanding comment about the number of low income people not seeing these political ads. Great addition to this blog, thank you!
McCain’s ads have been less negative, but this has provoked criticism that McCain is not being aggressive enough in this campaign. A sentiment shared after all three of the debates. The fact that he is not being aggressive as Obama has caused many to feel his Presidency will be conducted much the same way. The belief is he is too old and not willing to fight. Is this a fair criticism? Consider that comment for a follow up post.
I think that campaign commercials do have an effect on the election because many people spend most/all of their time on the couch watching tv. It also is the best way to get people to vote for you.
I am with Hannah. It seems as though Obama has many more television advertisements than McCain. It attracts people's attention the more and more they see it and when they vote, they'll think back to when they saw more Obama commercials than McCain.
I think the TV commericals are very important in the campaign because everyone watches the TV, and when you are watching the TV you see all the advertisement and commericals. Even though I'm a John McCain fan I think that Obama's commericals are more effective because he has alot more commericals and he is saying that he will change things.
I agree with Zac why does Obama have to read from the teleprompter during the debates.
Go John McCain!!!!
One thing i don't really care for about TV commercials is they can either be a smack in the face or a lie~! I mean I had never herd of John McCain Or Barrak Obama! So its hard for me to make a decision on who I would vote on based on their comercial, sine I don't know their Hx.
Mr Mercereau,
Every yr. I've been at Scs and there was a elevtion, we have had an election for the students, and every year the students have been correct! Will we be having an election this year at school?
*election* (sorry typo!)
1) Yes,I think the commericals are important in this election. They help us to decide who will help our country the most.
I will answer part 2 in another blog.
I think that TV commercials for the campaign are very important because it is the best way for the undecided voters to chose who they are going to vote for. The commercials always say bad things about the other candidate so the people watching will choose them.
i think that obama's commercials are more affective than mcCains commercials. The first reason is because Obama has way more commercials than mcCain. The second reason is that obama tells all the bad things mcCain is going to do. Probably half of these things aren't even going to be true. The third reason is Obama's commercials are more pursuasive.
I think McCain's commercial about Joe the plumber is more perswative than Obama's commercial about McCain and President Bush. This is the most eye catching commercial of all. Obama is comparing McCain to the President. This commercial is not perswative because Obama is not tallking about the issues. McCain gets into Obama's mind in the Joe the plumber commercial. McCain gets into Obama's mind by taking what Obama said to Joe. This points to a difference between McCain and Obama on the issues.
I think tv campaign commercials are important to this election because it can win over swing voters and other voters for candidates.
I just saw a McCain commercial on the internet. It used the words of Democratic senators and Obama's competitors to praise McCain. This was very effective because it is people who are close to Obama and are all saying nice things about McCain, which in a way is insulting Obama.
I think t.v. commercials are important in the election because almost everybody sees them. They do make people decide who they will vote for because they hear things they either like or don't like about the candidates. I don't like Obamas commercials because he is always saying mean stuff about McCain but I think more people will vote for Obama because they hear it so much.
Yes, I do think camercials are important because most kids don't watch the news, so this way when kids watch TV they have a better idea on what is going on.(If it is a kid channel.)And as Hannah said, most people watch TV most of the time. I think that McCain has the best advertising because he has good camercials that would convince most people,
"I" think.
I think that campaign commercials are very important because media is part of our culture. We do what we hear, so thats a big hit.
I havent really seen that many adds, but all Ive learned is that Obama is going to cut out the "middle man".
Personally, id vote for the guy who cuts gas prices. (thats a joke)
I agree with Malia it's important because many people watch tv so it might have more of an affect on those people deciding between who has better promises on taxes or goverment money or whatever the issue. I think McCains commercials have more affect because we need a president with experience.
