John McCain surprised many when he announced Sarah Palin as his Vice-Presidential running mate. I was one of many who responded with the statement “Sarah who?” Many of us have never heard of this person. Sarah Palin is known as a dark horse, one who is nominated unexpectedly, without previously having been discussed or considered as a likely choice. History is full of dark horses, for example, North Carolina’s own James K. Polk was one of the first dark horses in US politics. Abraham Lincoln has been described as a dark horse; that is ironic when one considers he is typically ranked in the polls as the best President ever. The addition of Sarah Palin makes this Presidential campaign truly historic. Regardless of who wins the election, there will be a first in US history: either an African-American will take the office of the President, or a female will occupy the office of the Vice-President. Clearly, this Presidential election is history in the making!
Regarding Senator McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin, was this a smart decision on his part? Why or Why not? As you ponder these two questions, consider how his choice may help or hurt him in the campaign. Remember, your post is not an opportunity to criticize or praise either political party. I want you to objectively consider McCain’s choice, and judge if it was a good or bad decision and then support your answer with solid reasoning. Like me, you may need to learn more about Sarah Palin; Google her name or try talking about this topic with the adults in your home.

I think it will hurt John McCain to have Sarah Palin as his runnig mate. He will lose votes from those who believe that women aren't qualified to be in possesion of that much power.
I think it will help John McCain to have Sarah Palin as his running mate. If somebody wanted Hillary Clinton to be president than maybe Sarah Palin will get some of Hillary Clintons votes from people who want a female as president/vice president.
I think it will help McCain. It will help win over some of the people that would vote for Hillary. With a few of the democrats fighting and some of the Republicains and by doing this it gives McCain a slight edge over Obama I belive. It wins women voters and regroups the republicans.
I think that they should leave Sarah Palins daugter alone.
I think that choosing Sarah Palin for John McCain's running mate will help him win the election. Like Dylan said, she will get alot of Hillary Clinton's supporters votes and alot of mom votes. This will probably increase John McCain's chance of winning this election. If the president is elected for a second term, does he pick a knew vice president?
I agree with Jonathan. Has Barak Obama picked his running mate? If so, who did he choose?
Makenzie, Obama picked his running mate last week. He chose Joe Biden. He is a democratic senator from Delaware.
Hannah I beleve that the Bible says that women shouldn't have a high position in the church like being the pastor . But the Bible never says anything about a women being high up in politics. Otherwise God wouldn't have allowed Deborah to be the judge at that time. No offense meant Hanah.
Mr.Mercereau would you tell us in class tomorow what time you'll be on .
I think it will help John McCain to have Sarah Palin as his running mate. I know women are still under-power or something like that but it still doesn't mean we are useless, now back on topic, Sarah Palin is actually a good vice president, she really wants to help make our country better. Even though she has some crises in her life, her 17 year old daughter is pregant, Her oldest son is going to war, and I think she's having another baby, Wow! And then she's a vice president. She really want to take it slow, I mean she must have a lot of emotions. Sad that her son's going to war, Mad her 17 year old daughter is pregant, without telling her mother :O
And then exicited that she's going to have another baby, and MIGHT come the next vice president of United States!
I am nutural about this subject, although her daughter is preganite and she is a women, I kinda like her. Do you think John McCain thinks she will help him win votes of wemon?>
i think it will help jhon mcCain get some votes . and he will win faster
I think it will not hurt John McCain to have Sarah Palin running as his mate.I agree with Hannah in a way that people believe that women do not have much power and are not qualified. But then again Iagree with Dylan, Jonathan and Mackenzie. That if some people voted for Hillary they might vote for Sarah Palin.
Hannah your comment was really good I just had a different opinion.
I think that his choice was a great one. All the women will be on his side because of Sarah Palin. She will be a dark horse but I think a very good one. She can make history along with John McCain because John McCain will be considered the oldest president.
I believe McCain made a good choice on his part because Sarah Palin is the governor of Alaska and very popular too. So I believe that she just might help McCain win the election.
I think John Mccain made a good choice picking Sarah Palin for his vice preident. I think this because most people would like a lady who is younger and has had kids to be their vice president. She has had good experiece because she has been the mayor of her hometown, then governor of Alaska.
I think that John McCain made a good choice choosing Sarah Palin from Alaska as his Vice-presidential running mate because he probably wouldn't get many votes otherwise. Now that he has chosen her he will most likely get more votes from Alaska.
Sarah Palin was elected at age 42 and is Alaska's youngest govener and the states 1st female to take into office.
She was also a beauty gueen in 1984.
Sarah Palin was also mayor of her hometown and govener of Alaska.
She has experiance and knows what she's doing. Also Sarah would be the first female into office.
Yes Abby I think that it will help McCain win many women voters. But if Obama would have chose Clinton, then I belive that it would hurt McCain
And Sarah I agree , Women should have a bit of power. Women proved that when they got the right to vote.
Hmm… it seems Hannah stands alone in her belief that Sarah Palin was not a wise choice. Good job on taking a stand and defending it. I’m proud of you.
On the other hand, Dylan, Jonathan, Mackenzie, Alexis, Claire, Matthew, Scott, Mallory and Amanda all believe Sarah Palin is a wise choice. Majority usually wins elections!
I’m getting the impression from these posts John McCain is going to get votes simply because his running mate is a woman. What about her qualifications, and ability to run the country? As Matthew pointed out, John McCain is 72 years old. For many in the US, retirement is age 65. The Vice President is often described as only being a “heartbeat away” from office. So as you think about her, is she suited to be a future President of the United States? Then again, does age or gender really matter in this election/office?
Claire, nice job with your comments on Hannah’s post, that’s showing respect.
Jonathan, excellent job with your comments and knowing about Joe Biden.
Alexis, you need to work on your post. It was too brief “and he will win faster” is not proper English!
Amanda, good job on researching some facts about Sarah Palin. The fact that she was a beauty queen is interesting, but will that have any impact on her ability in Office?
And Jonathan, sorry but I haven't been able to check the blog until the weekend. Next time I'll try to let everyone know when I'll be checking the Posts.
I think it was a smart desition to have Sarah Palin as his Vicepresidental running mate because like you said, look how well Abraham Lincoln turned out.I don't think it will hurt him because like Mackenzie and Dylan said about having votes from Cliton. And that she was from alaska and might be the first woman vice pres.
amanda that is cool how you found out how she was a beauty queen in 1984 and was the youngest govener.
i think john mcCain made a very good decision by choosing sarah palin as a vise president running mate. Because she is a strong christian. i believe we need a strong christian running and helping our country to grow in christ. So that we stay a better country and that we are free to woriship God.I also believe that this will help in minority.I think this will help him in the campaign, because sarah is a woman that will also make some more women to vote for john mcCain. This will also help in the minority.Sarah has also been a strong governer in alaska.
I think it will help John McCain to have Sarah Palin as his running mate. The people who wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton and still want to vote for a woman might vote for John McCain now.
Elizabeth, I agree very much with what you said about having a vice president who can help our country grow in Christ. That is very important!!
I feel that Sarah Palin will help John McCain. She will get some of Hillarys supporters to vote for her.
Yes I tink it was a good choice for McCain to choose Sarah Palin!!!! She will be the first female vice president that weve ever had. She is a nice woman to us and I think a lot of women will vote for her. Sarah also has a son in the army that is helping our country (very good thing.) She is young at 44 years old and I think that is good except she has no experience in Washington D.C.. So that is one bad thing about her and why he should have not picked her. The most important thing of all is that she is a CHRISTIAN and believes in God!!!!!!!!! 6a amber
I think John McCain made a good choice in picking Sarah Palin. For one reason, because she is 100% pro- life! I think if John McCain and Sarah win this election, They will try to make abortion illegal, or at least I hope so! I think that is one reason why he picked her. Also, I think maybe he likes her because she is a goo speaker and may help him win the votes of young people because she knows how to talk to teenagers because she has them. I just hope she doesn't miss a major government meeting or something because of her little child is sick! I mean family is important but she has a husband and older kids to help her with that!
I do not believe this was a very smart decision! I do not think this is smart because I don't think women should have the right to have so much power and be in control. But I still believe Sarah Palin may be able to help John McCain win this election!!!
Just because I posted the fact that it will hurt John McCain to have Sarah Palin as a running mate doesn't necessarily mean I believe this. In my personal opinion, I think Sarah Palin is a wonderful woman of God. I recently saw a video clip of her speaking before she was asked to be John McCain's running mate. She said many things about her strong beliefs in God and I like her because of that. I also think she will be a wonderful running mate/possible vice president because of her experiences as gov. of Alaska.
I think it will help john MCcain having sarah Palin as his running mate. i agree with dylan. I think it will help him because the people who wanted a girl president can still have a chance of getting a girl vice president. I think she will be a good vice president or in the future a good president. I think this because first she has past democratic experience as a govenor of Alaska. second she will be a young president if and when she gets elected. Not only is she young she has a large family of her own. This is a good thing because she will know what the family's in this country need and will need in the future.
I think that John McCain picked the right person to help him in the competition. I say this because from what my parents say she is very skilled at these kinds of things. I think she will be a big help to John McCain.
I also beleve that a women being a President or vice President will change the life of girls around America.
Hannah, you do make a good point it is likely for that to happen. I'll think about what you said.
I think he made the right choice in Sarah Palin. She might be a woman but I think she is a good strong CHRISTAN. I think she is getting the attention of Hilliary's voters. I know a man my dad knows and he read my blog and gave me 7 reasons to why McCain made the right person. Here are the reasons:
1) She's a woman.
2) She is from an energy state (Alaska).
3) She is different, fresh, authentic.
4) She is staunchly conservative, especially on social issues.
5) She is an evangelical Christian.
6) The biggest criticism that will raised against her, that she has too little experience, won't have much credibility in this election.
7) She is tough and well-spoken.
I agree with Hannah. I think it will hurt Mcain's number of votes. Even though Sarah Palin is well qualified to be vice president or maybe even president some day, some people will not vote for her because she was not very well known.
I believe John McCain made a wise choice in choosing Sarah Palin for his Vice-Presidential running mate because she has a lot of experience and if anything happened to John McCain, she would be able to run the country well. I think she will help him get more votes because she is a good person and a lot of moms will like her because she is a mom too.
I agree with Hannah that some people believe that women shouldn't be in high authority. I also agree with Dylan, I do think that some of the people that would have voted for Hillary Clinton will vote for John McCain because of Sarah Palin. Personally I think that this will help John McCain in the election. This morning I heard on the radio that 20 some percent of the people that would have voted for Hillary Clinton might vote for John McCain because of Sarah Palin.
I think that it was a smart move for John McCain to pick Sarah Palin. I say this is good because he was getting less support before he picked her. But I also agree with A.J and Hannah bcause some people don't think that women should be able to run for president. But I do hope that John McCain wins the presidential election. GO John MCCAIN!!!!!.
