Blog #1: The Importance of Current Events

The importance of current events cannot be emphasized enough. I promise you that 100 years from now, students in middle schools across God’s earth will be studying your current events. The difference is that to them, it will be “stuff” that happened in the past. It bears repeating: “Today’s current events will be tomorrow’s history.” Discussing current events makes you an informed and involved citizen. Moreover, you will better understand people and how they relate to one another. So, let us consider for a moment the topic of current events. Granted, the upcoming Presidential election will make every textbook, but what about the other events taking place? Aside from the comments I’ve blogged, do you think it is important for middle schoolers to learn about current events? Why or why not? What kinds of current events interest you? Consider these questions for a moment and post a response.

I think it is important for middle schoolers to learn about current events because we need to know what is going on in our world because we are the future of the United States. Middle schoolers have an affect on our world, therefor we can have an imput on what is going on if we learn about it. Also, at age eightteen, we will be able to vote and we need to be prepared.

My favorite type of current events are sports and the presidential election. I like to learn abot them because I no the president is who has the final "say-so" on what is happening in the United States, so I like to kind-of know what may happen if eiether candadate wins.

I think middle schoolers need to know current events, because it will help them learn what's going on in the world. My favorite current event is sports, olmpics, and of course the presidential election. Sports mostly update every day and it's good to see if your favorite team is winning, or doing something that really pleases you. But it is hard to understand " Why does the greatest team; I love; lose!" Sports have a lot of action :). The olmpics are the most wonderful thing for most people, and then some other people " Nah.. I rather watch cartoons." But the olmpics are actually pretty amazing. First you think, this will be boring... after a few minutes your like Wow! This is AMAZING! These people have talent! And of course... the presidential election. Well if you want my opinoin, I'm not into debates. But I don't want Obama to win. I wish there was someone that will be perfect for the job :D! But right now there isn't :(. But when I watch it sometimes, it is intresting.
P.S I love Smiles!
P.S.S To all warrior cat fans; 6 more days until Eclipse!

I think it's important to study current events because one day you might be on a game show and need to know a questain like 'who won 8 gold medels at the bejjing games?' ,you learned it in 6th grade history. And you'll not be clueless in whats going on in the World. I think the curent events that I want to learn about are as follows:
The Russians invading Georgia, Imean what are the Russians trying to do become the Soviate Union?
The ellection, I mean sorry Obama fans but I dont realy like him as President.
Also the under aged Chinese Gymnasts. That one girl [no offense China] but just admit it that she's 13.

6b jonathan said...

Agian China no ofense but your whole country in a single sport couldn't get as many gold medals as a single man Michale Phelps

Abby, great comment about being able to vote when you’re eighteen-for many of you fellow 6th graders, that’s only six short years away!

Matthew-explain what kinds of sports interest you? Is it football, basketball, baseball? I know some other middle schoolers that enjoy competitive basket weaving. I’m not sure we’ll talk much about that one!

Sarah, I’m please to read the presidential election interests you. We will be looking at that a great deal in the upcoming months. We don’t need to know which candidate you support, but consider sharing what ISSUES interest you.

Jonathan, if you are ever on game show, I want a cut of your game winnings! And Jonathan, outstanding job on posting your opinion about China-well done!!

All right guys, the fruit thing is a bit off topic. Let’s stick to current events, and save favorite foods for another day. But I am very proud of each of you for doing your homework so promptly. You had a whole week to complete this, but you jumped on it right away-well done!

6b Sarah said...

I like apple cobler :)
Thanks Mr. Mercereau! For the blog! It is fun ;). I agree with Jonathan, I'm so not a Obama fan, I heard he's a muzleam! :0

I think it is important that we as middle schoolers learn about current events because we need to know what is going on. We are also the future of America and need to know so we can improve and change the future.
I like current events such as movies, celebrities and culteral events.
I really like this blogging thing! It is a great idea and a fun way to discuss our opinions!

6A Amanda said...

I really wish we got to vote when we turned 12! That is sorta random but I just had to fit it in!

Mr.Mercereau said...

Amanda, I’m glad you created your account successfully, but I must confess it’s a bit odd to be responding to your post when you’re sitting eight feet away on the couch! I guess I have to get used to you being one of my students! Thanks for going to your mom to help set up your account. Besides Hannah Montana, what celebrities interest you?

6BMatthew said...

Well, I like to hear about sports like basketball, football, tennis, and very little baseball.

Mr.Mercereau said...

Matthew, you mentioned basketball and football. What are your favorite teams, and who are favorite players?

6B Mackenzie said...

I think that learning about current events is very important. Like you said, today's current events are tomorrow's history. If you don't know what's happening in the world, how can you have an opinion on it? It's also great and interesting to know what is going on around you. I personally enjoy learning about sports. Sometimes, when I'm looking through the newspaper, I'll come across something about kids like me. That's kind of cool to be able to relate to them. One of my favorite things to read is the newspaper.

6A Amanda said...

I am interested in celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, Taylor Swift, High School Musical cast and others I can't think of right now.
If you like movies and celebrities then tell me what movies and what celebrities you like! Pleeeeeeeeeeeease! That means you to Papa!

I love beef jerky!
My fav food!

Mr.Mercereau said...

Amanda, you are getting way off topic. I'm glad you enjoy posting, but we must stick to the topic at hand. Comments about the dog is not what blogging is about. STICK TO THE TOPIC!

6b Sarah said...

Yeah We know...
I still can't belive that! I know it's for protection, but what if the teacher shoots a kid :o!

Mr.Mercereau said...

Milia: great job. What movies are you thinking about when you mention premiers? Also, superbowls are my kind of fun, which NFL team is your favorite?

Mr.Mercereau said...

Mackenzie! Yea!! It warms my heart to read you enjoy the newspaper. Every Tuesday we get a free Statesville Record and Landmark that I hope to use in class quite often. Current events can be very interesting.

6b Sarah said...

I love Newspapers! Every newspaper has at least 5 articles I like to read! :)

6B Abby said...

Mr Mercereau,
What are we allowed to blog about on any random days?

6B Claire said...

Yes,I think it's important for middle schoolers to learn about current events because we need to prepare for when we get older.Even though we are middle schoolers we need to know what is going on in the world. Therfore, we should pay attention to what is going on. We should watch the news and read the paper as much as we can.

My favorite current event is sports. I love sports because I like to know who just broke a world record in running or who is the best tennis player.Things like this I want to know.It is very important.

6B Abby said...

One Current Event I am confussed on is the drout. Are we in one or not?

6BMatthew said...

Well the drout is almost over because of so much rain.I would say we're about 1 inch. of rain out of the drout.

6A Amanda said...

Did any of you guys watch the olympics? If so did you watch the opening ceremony? What was your favorite sport to watch and why?

6A Amanda said...

Do any of you guys like this blogging?
Papa, what things will we be blogging about in the future?
What will we be learning in history?

6B Mackenzie said...

Claire, I like learning about the world records in sports too. My favorites are swimming, running, diving, and of course, gymnastics. Which ones do you like to watch?

P.S. Mr. Mercereau, Malia is spelled with an "a" not an "i".

6B Mackenzie said...

Mr. Mercereau, What day will the new presidents inauguration be? Do you count points of for spelling mistakes or incorrect grammer/punctuation?

Mr.Mercereau said...

Abby, after you have responded to my blog, you are welcome to post your thoughts about another current event. Just make sure it’s a current topic. Favorite fruits do not qualify as a top level current event; however, Texas teachers carrying guns and the drought certainly fall in the category of current events. So go ahead and start a new topic, just be sure to always answer my questions. Technically, we are still in a drought based on annual rainfall, but all this rain from Hurricane Faye has helped tremendously.

Claire, I’m glad to read you enjoy sports. That’s one of my hobbies, so we will probably talk about sports throughout the year.

MacKenzie, thank you very much for catching my error in Malia’s name. Way to keep me on my toes!

Malia, my apologies for misspelling your name. See, we teachers make mistakes too!

Amanda, to answer your question succinctly, please refer to your course syllabus. In case you don’t know what succinctly means look it up and I’ve already warned your mom not give you the answer! Besides, Mrs. Clark will be proud of you for using your dictionary.

6B Abby said...

Amanda,
My fav. sport to watch is diving. One thing I am really suprised to see is the fact that China spent soooooo much money on the opening ceromony and the arena, but the other side of the country is living in poverty or they are almost to the piont. They spent millions of dollars on their olympics and can't spend a dime on the poor in their country!!!! Do you think that is smart?

6BMatthew said...

the sports i like to watch at the olymics are: track and field, diving, gymnastics, swimming, soccer, tennis.

I believe that it is important that middle schoolers should learn about current events because we need to prepare ourselves for the outside world.

Some current events that interest me are the Olympics and the presidential election all because I really don’t care who wins as long as they stick to their promises. And not to be offensive Sarah but that's just a rumor on the news.

I think that it is important for middle schoolers to learn about current events because problems that may occur today may happen again tomorrow. If we know what we did wrong we can fix the mistake in the future.I also think it is important because we live in this world and we should know what happens in it. We will be the future generation so we need to know what happens today.

Some of the current events i am interested in are the olympics, movies coming out,and the presidential election.I am also interested in watching the news and reading the papers headlines in the morning. I am most interested in the olympics because there are many different events.

I am interested in things like the presidentail election. No matter who wins history will be made. Either we will have the first black president or the first female vice president. I am interested in how it will turn out. Also, I like the Olympics especially since Michael Phelps broke many records and won 8 gold medals for the United States.

I think it is important that we learn about history. If we didn't know anything about history, then we wouldn't know who our past presidents were.Nore would we know how people like Indians were able to servive, and I love to think that most of the stuff we have today we wouldn't have if it wernt for people in the past. we wouldnt have stuff Like pots; pans or electricity. The past current event that I liked was the olympics. Im madly in love with sports.especially guymnastics. I think the election is important to. After all the person you chuse will be running our country. So that means kids my age needs to know how to vote right.

I think it's important for middle school students to learn about current events because we need to be informed about what is going on in the world such as who is going to be our next president. When we turn 18, we will be able to vote. Therefore, we will definitely need to be prepared when the time comes.

Many current events interest me but, my favorite would have to be the Olympics and the upcoming presidential election. I always love to find out who wins the election and Olympics.

I think middle schoolers should learn about current events because it will help us in history in college. It will make us better informed about the world we live in. It takes a long time to understand all the issues and how they affect us and our country.

The current events I follow most often are sports and weather. I read SI KIds magazine and I like to watch the weather channel.

6A Amber said...

Yes. I believe middle schoolers should learn about current events because we need to know what is going on in the world around us. Also current events will help us learn of natural disasters like tornadoes or hurricanes that we may need to leave our homes. The last thing is so that we can pray for others!!

I want to talk about how North Korea is building nukes. There are only a few countries in the world who can produce them and North Korea is kinda small. And the building that they blew up, why do they want to rebuild it? And Abby remember the lesson that Mrs.Mkinney taught us about communism. Well its like that money rarely reaches the lower people of communist countries.
