Blog #7: Chinchillas!

http://kramerchins.com/chinhistory.aspx

Since we are studying South America, I thought it would be interesting to talk about Chinchillas. Chinchillas are small, cute rodents that are native to the Andes Mountains. This blog is about current events so I will justify this topic by noting I currently own a Chinchilla and his presence in our house is definitely an event! My Chinchilla’s name is Chillibean. Chinchillas are a lot of fun, and the best part is they have no odor. Click on the above link to learn more about Chinchillas. Take it a step further and discover the fascinating history of "Where do Chinchillas come from?"

As I discover more and more about this interesting animal, I learned about a National Reserve in Chile dedicated to preserving the species. Yes, you read that correctly. Land has been set aside in Chile to protect this animal from extinction. I find that fascinating since I bought two Chinchillas relatively cheap. I must also point out Chinchillas continue to be sold in both Mooresville and Hickory for a reasonable price. If these rodents are nearing extinction and needing protection, why are they being sold in chain stores across America? Post your thoughts about Chinchillas and the need for the Chinchilla National Reservation.

Yes! I think Chillibean is cute, even though he does poop alot! I am not sure why there is a chinchilla reserve but they are selling them through pet stores. It doesn't make much sense. Maybe it is where they hold chinchillas so people won't take so many and make clothes and jackets out of their fur. That is really mean but their fur is so soft it would keep you really warm. We used to have two but one died last Christmas 2 years ago. Chinchillas are my 2nd favorite animal. I love their soft fur. They are very cute and cuddly. I wish we had one million of them!

Yes, Mr. Mercereau I also think chinchillas are very cute! Like amanda said'' It doesn't make any sense.'' If they are going extinct why are they still selling them in pet stores? I think since they are such good pets, people want to buy them! They don't have odors and don't make messes. I can kinda see why they are still selling them. The wild chinchillas are probably being extinct because people are hunting them for their fur. But,the tame chinchillas are great pets! I would love to have a chinchilla!

I have to agree with Amanda and Claire on a few things one of them is chinchillas are pretty cute. Also why do they still sell them in pet stores if chinchillas are going extinct? I mean my cousin has one! Also yeah it's a good idea for that reserve because people hunt wild chinchillas for their fur.

Like Amanda, Claire, and Scott said,"Chinchillas are really cute." If chinchillas are really going extinct, than why try to sell them all so quickly? Chinchillas are cute, fluffy, and have soft fur. What's not to love about these animals? They make a great pet and most if not all kids love them. The whole ,"Chinchillas are going extinct" is most likely a rumer someone started. Like Mr. Mercereau said," Chinchillas are still being sold." People have to be getting chinchillas somewhere. They aren't going to fall from the sky!

I agree with Amanda, Claire, Scott, and Mallory that chinchillas are adorable. But I wish they were more expensive so they won't sell as easily at the pet store and will not become extinct. I think they are becoming extinct because so many expensive jackets, teddy bears, and pillows made of their fur. Why would people want to sell them because they will become extinct. I am glad that they have the reserve so no one will hunt them and make coats out of their fur. Maybe we should start a club to save the chinchillas.

I am glad all of you feel Chinchillas are cute, and part of your assignment is to express your thoughts. However, read the blog again and focus on the part “If these rodents are nearing extinction and needing protection, why are they being sold in chain stores across America?” Please think hard about that question, it’s meant to be a reflective response.

Yes,I agree with Amanda and Claire, Chinchillas are cute. But it still doesn't make any sense. If Chinchillas are going extinct, why are the pet stores still selling them. But I agree with Claire since they are such great pets, people want to buy them becuase they don't smell or bite.I feel that if Chinchillas are in need of help, I would love to give it to them. I also agree with Mallory, it's probably a rumor, and they have to get Chinchillas from somewhere. I mean, I could see someone hunting for their fur to, it's really soft. I really hope Chinchillas don't go extinct. I wouldn't mind having one.

I do agree with everone that Chinchillas are very cute, cuddly and adorable. The only reason that I can think of that the Chinchilla's are becoming extinct is that people in South America are hunting the Chinchillas for their fur to make clothes and other things. And since people are not hunting them here in the United States that is why you can buy them so cheap. I also agree with Malory that I hope it is just a rumor that the Chinchillas are really beoming extincted.

I think chinchillas are cute but a little weird so i do not think they should be sold just for people to buy them and then kill them and make clothes out of them...So what i think is that people should sell them because they are very soft but they should not sell them to be used for clothing, Just to be bought an have fun with them.

I think chinchillas are very cute! But if they are going extinct, why would they be so inexpensive and easy to buy? The only thing I can think of is maybe people want good homes for the chinchillas that are left. I can kind of understand that. I hope chinchillas don't go extinct!

I agree with everybody that yes chinchillas are cute. But come on there is no reason to have a Chinchilla National Reservation. I mean come on you can still buy them and everything. I think it is kind of dumb on their part.

Yes I agree with Amanda. The reservation is just trying to protect their soft beautiful fur. I also agree with Claire they're great pets. They are also very cute. They aren't really going extent. The wild ones probably are going extent because they are being killed for their fur. However, the ones in captivity probably are going to go extent because the price on their fur might go up and the owners probably are going to want to sell them to make some money. They don't need to be killed just for fur, they need to be here to show how wonderful God's creation is. I mean just look how we all said they were cute when we said that we were saying that God created wonderful things on the Earth. When we look at the chinchillas we're looking at God's creation.

Yes, I to believe that chinchillas are cute for, I too have a chinchilla named Peanut, although he is my brother's.
I believe they are selling chinchillas so as to hep them reproduce faster and in this way making more chinchillas to save.

Some animals live longer as house hold pets and maybe it's the same with the chichilla. They probably sell them cheap so that people can afford them as pets. Other than that, I agree it is very confusing why they would go at great lengths to keep them from being extint but sell them for cheap prices. It doesn't make sense. PS I think your chinchilla is adorable Mr. Mercereau!

They are so cute!!!
If they have a chinchilla resevre,
why do they sell chinchchillas across the U.S? I agree with Claire, if there going extinct, why are they selling them? The reserve was probably started to save the chinchillas from being hunted. Poor Chinchilllas!

i think that chinchillas are very cute i dont know how they are becoming extinct if they are selling them in the store becuse a lot of people have them so if they were going extinct there whould not be a lot and they probaly whould not sell them every day and i agree with claire they probaly are going extinct in the wild because people are hunting there fur to sell

Like everyone else, I think that chinchillas are very cute. I also agree with Amanda, Claire, and Scott, if chinchillas are realy going extinct, why are chain stores selling them? I hope Mallory is right. It just doesn't add up. If chinchillas are going extinct, why would they be sold period? I think either it is a rumer or people just want to make money fast. Chinchillas are pretty soft, it makes sence to me.

I think that chinchillas are not going extinct, but they are near being threatened as near extinct, if that makes sense. But all the environmentalists don't want to take any chances. that is why they still sell them in America.

I think chinchillas are so cute and cuddly looking. It does not make any sense to me why people would sell them if they know they are on there way to extinction. I don't think they should be able to sell them in pet stores or anywhere else. I think it is good that they have a reserve for them. so if almost all of them die they will not all be extinct. I can't see how people could hunt them though. They are so cute. I agree with mallory they have to be getting them from somewhere. I think people should stop selling them to pet stores. But I do see why people would bye them. I don't think anybody is trying to hurt them. they are just loved and people want to have them as pets.

6A Dylan said...

I agree with every body that chinchillas are cute. I agree with Jacob that think they want to sell them so they can reproduce and make more chinchillas. The other reason is that people would want them because they are cute animals and don't bother anybody and they leave no odor like you said Mr. Mercereau. I would like a chinchilla! But I think my cat would try and eat it!

Mr. Mercereau, I read the link about chinchillas. It was very interesting!! I learned lots of stuff from reading it. It's really crazy that people think they are going extinct. They're still selling them because this animal is probably the really popular at the time right now. The pet stores has to keep the chinchillas in stock to make the customers happy. It is all about money! If a group of people start trying to convince other people that chinchillas are going extinct, some people who love chinchillas will pay lots of money for one chinchilla. People today in this world are really greedy. Anyone can see this.

6B Alex said...

I agree with everyone that chinchillas are cute. I really doubt they are going extinct. I think they probably do make good pets. Many people hunt them for thier fur for clothing. Ithink it is cruel and wrong. I would like to see some one be able to go through being hunted, killed, and be made into a coat. It should be illegal to kill a chinchilla!!!

Those thing are adorable! I think the reservation is to protect them form being killed for fur.....or maybe even animal testing for makeup and skin care. But, if people think they are indangered, I don't understand why you can go to the local pet mart and buy one. The probably make great and loving pets.

Hey everyone! I just happened across this site, and wanted to let you all know that chinchillas are very, very close to extinction in the wild (obviously there are a lot of domestic chins). They actually number in the low thousands, and were once thought to be extinct until a colony of them was discovered in Chile about 10 years ago!

Unfortunately, there has been little to no success with reintroducing domestic chinchillas back into the wild, so the pet chinchilla is almost a different critter than the wild ones. Side by side they even look a little different.

I can assure those who have no experience with them, they are indeed very good, if long-lived pets. Definitely not something you want to get on a whim, but my little sisters loves her two chin boys!
